This one is the continuing of my previous post about the hail and storm.
Well, after we had big storm and hail in the morning, we got another storm attack in the afternoon. This one was even bigger than what had happened in the morning.
The weather channels was keeping the storm track and issued tornado warning. Phillip told us to remain sitting in the basement as we watched the TV. I was quiet nervous when the siren roared to warn about the possibility of tornado. Outside, hails was pouring like rain….just like that…dropping from the sky and the sound was horrible when it hits the roof or windows. The siren gave me butterfly in my stomach as it remind me of tornado attack which happened to us about three years ago.
May 2003,
I was only couple months living in USA, and started settle down at our first super tiny apartment in Liberty. One day, I was watching the MTV channel and I think it was Sunday afternoon when the whole morning already wet. Then suddenly the channel got interrupted by the warning the possibility of tornado, but..hey..I didn’t know anything about tornado…never heard it and never care about it!! Phillip was acting nervous, he started picked up our rain jackets and told me to wear it and covered Kaela with warmer clothes. Then the siren was off….I was still unaware of what would happen then. I even got upset at Phil because he switched off the TV. When the siren went louder and would never stop, I could see that the sky got really darkened and the winds was blowing so fast. We went down to the first floor and headed to the laundry room. There were some neighbors already there and were looking nervously at the sky.
Phil was trying to set us up to be away from the windows or heavy laundry machines. I remember I was standing outside to see the sky, when suddenly I saw a big whirling dark wind coming from a distance. Everybody screaming,
"Oh my God…is coming…tornado is coming….oh my God!’
"Get inside…………"
Phillip pushed me and Kaela to a small closet and closed the door while he was standing in front the door to prevent it open. The big move that you have to do if you in tornado path, is to go down to the lowest ground. But we didn’t have the underground basement at that apartment…..
When I was inside the closet, Kaela was crying the whole time so I didn’t hear anything. When I asked Phillip what was it like when the tornado passing through the building, he to told me that the sound just like a train passing by and although he saw a clear air but he could see a lot of debris flying over and suddenly the roof got lift up and flew like a piece of paper!!…After couple minutes inside the closet, Phillip opened the door and told me that it was safe to get out.
When I saw over the window….OH MY GOD!! Couldn’t believe my eyes……
Everything were up side down, the roof was gone, clustered pieces of woods here and there, broken windows, the green grass covered by debris…..It was horrible so one of the girl who was pregnant got hysterical and started screaming and crying.
Allahu Akbar (God is Great!!)…………….
Some students who lived at William Jewell dorm came and checked the apartment one by one by screaming "Is anybody there? Are you OK?……
It was surreal…….We were lucky that our building didn’t get torn up by the other building was a mess. We got big tree fell on the roof so the whole apartment got wet. But our car was a wreck……
Liberty was totally closed, we had to walk to reach the road that still open for traffic and waited for Phillip’s parents to picked us up. We had to stay with them for couple weeks and could never come back to our first apartment again…….!!
Back to what was happening today, for the first time I saw big hails as big as golf ball. I went out and picked some of them just to feel how hard it is. Holly cow, these hails are hard as a rock!! I believe if someone get hit by the hails as big and as hard like I hold in my hand, it would smash the skull easily.
Too bad, tornado hit the ground in Sedalia area. Killed one person, two are missing, six injured and hundred cars and building got damaged. My prayer are with them who had this unfortunate event!
